The tweeters and sub are crossed upstream of the B&O amp. On the B&O the 4 door speakers don't get full range signals. Still doesn't make sense to me, though, why you can't have the sub out going from the 8.9 to your Kenwood and remove the LC2i? The fellows I bought the 8.9 from just installed a 8.9 in a 2018 150 with the B&O system.all I saw was the 8.9 and the mono sub amp.I dug in to this more over the weekend with a friendly local installer, who has more experience and better equipment than I do (though the 2018 B&O was new to him as well). Got to love those unexpected speed bumps. Part 2 is replacing the door/pillar speakers with something better, bridging the mid-range channels on the 8.9 for more power, and probably adding a second matching underseat sub. Like I said already sounds great, even with stock speakers. The 8.9 does a great job cleaning up the factory signal and then handling imaging, balance, EQ, etc. There are probably other ways I could have done this and may yet still but.seems to be working fine.Īs for the center speaker, that is unplugged and probably will stay that way - the 8.9 imaging is more than capable of filling the front soundstage properly as I was soon to discover. There's a great post here: that has the full factory wiring diagram for the B&O.įinally, had to add an LC2i to grab the high level sub output because the way the tweeters are run I couldn't fit them all and a sub in to the Audison amp/DSP without using passive crossovers for the highs, which I didn't want to do because one of the main features of the 8.9 is active crossovers which make it easier to tune and don't sap power. No harnesses out yet either so lots of soldering, etc. Ended up having to run new wires for those all the way back. It's very different from the Sony (and the stock 7 speaker setup for that matter) - there's a new digital output from the HU to the rear stock amp, no way to disable the EQ/flatten the factory signals with Forscan like you can with the Sony, and the way they wire/cross-over the tweeters is, well, different. Wiring around and with the B&O is a pain in the ***. I'm still planning to replace them in part 2 - kicking around some Focals at the moment - but it's already much better than the OEM sound. A better amp, much better DSP, and deadening in the doors really brings the sound out of these things. Surprisingly, they work pretty well in this setup. I haven't replaced the stock speakers yet ( edit: replacement done, see part 2) - I was curious to see how well the new B&O hold up compared to the Sony's, which may as well been made out of paper-mache for all the good they did. That, and overall the system just isn't that loud.īuryl sound deadening in all 4 doors, inner and outer panelsĪmp the speakers via an Audison 8.9, a combo amp with a great DSP and active crossovers, and a separate amp powering an underseat subwoofer (Kenwood XR600.1)įor the underseat sub I picked the Audison APBX10DS hideway, which fits perfectly under the seat and knocks the factory sub clean out of the water.though I am probably going to add another one of these in part 2: the doors, which soak up those middle freqs like a wad of Brawny picks up water. The other speakers are actually pretty decent for "premium" OEM but suffer from muddy sound in the mid-range, a common problem due to subpar amplification and being installed in giant resonating sheet metal i.e. In particular the B&O sub is A) not that powerful and B) in need of level management, which it does not have. Still, it's.ok? Not bad? Faint praise is the best I could muster so I decided to do something about it. A runner who comes in 6th place in a race is better than the one who came in 8th, too.Įdit: Part 3 is here with an update on using the Nav-TV a2b, which I now consider a must have for integration with aftermarket amps & dsps with the B&O Play. Not that being better than the Sony is a high bar to clear. The B&O is the replacement for the Sony "premium" system in 2018 models, and to answer the question that always comes up: Yes, it is better than the Sony. Finished part one of my B&O Play upgrade.
